Converting a Man into a Woman and Vice Versa

Modern science and medical progress have reached to the conclusion that some people have certain hormonal reactions in their bodies, which develops in them a close affinity towards the opposite sex. A man who is inclined to such affinities could be converted into a woman and vice versa because of their sexual affinities.

"It is strictly prohibited in Islam to change Allah???s creation by replacing or changing the parts of body of one sex with those of the other. The Holy Qur???an says, ???So, set your face to the faith steadily, this (faith) being the nature designed by Allah, on which He has created the mankind. There is no change in Allah???s creation.??? (30:30)

1. One of the meanings of the phrase ???There is no change in Allah???s creation??? - is that it is not lawful for any human being to make changes in what Allah (swt) has created. (Ahkam al-Qur???an, 3:154)

The word ???creation??? in this verse has different meanings of which, one is the outward appearance and shape as reported by Ibn Abbas. It is reported that the Apostle of Allah (saws) said: ???The meaning of the verse here, is that there should be no change in Allah???s creation,??? which means that it is prohibited to make any changes in Allah???s creation - like castrating male animals. Then, changing a man into a woman and a woman into a man should also be seen in this context of this explanation, and both would be included in the verse, and therefore, the prohibition will apply - to both - for the males and females. This also means that in the present days, it is not allowed for any human being to seek medical help or to go in for a surgical operation that would change their sexual nature, which has happened in the first place, according to the Will of Allah (swt).

In other verses of the Holy Qur???an there is a clear reference of Satan???s promise to mislead human beings from the Straight Path and spread mischief on the earth. The verse reads: ???I will lead them astray and I will tempt them with false hopes, and give them my order, so they shall slit the ears of cattle, and I will give them my order so they shall alter the creation of Allah.???  (Al-Qur???an, 4: 119)

It means that Satan has been declared as an enemy of human beings in the Holy Qur???an by Allah (swt) and has sworn an oath that he will seduce human beings with temptations and false hopes, and motivate them to bring about changes in Allah???s creation, and this verse clearly tells us that bringing about changes in Allah???s creation is clearly the work of the Satan. The Muslim theologians all over the world are unanimous in their opinion that making changes in Allah???s creation means altering anything that has been created by Allah both in its appearance and qualities.

 

For instance, if a human being who has been created by Allah (swt) is destined to be born in this world as a male and, if other human beings take it upon themselves to bring about a change in his sexual appearance after he has been born as a male, and alter his sexual nature into that of a female then, it would be unlawful for them in Islam, for it is a change of appearance of the Creation of Allah.

 

In the same manner, inducing feminine traits in a male with medications would also be unlawful since it results in changing his natural qualities. The author of Rooh al-Ma???ani has expressly concluded that the ???change??? mentioned in the Qur???an in a creation of Allah, includes both in its appearance and quality. The Holy Traditions of the Prophet (saws) also agree on this fact and confirm that changing Allah???s creation is an unlawful act for human beings, and brings about the curse of Allah (swt) on those who alter His creation in any way. It is stated in a Hadith that the ???women who do tattooing on others, or get themselves tattooed, create a space between their front teeth, and pluck hair from their faces and eyebrows??? are all cursed by Allah. The great commentator and interpreter of the Holy Qur???an and the Islamic jurist Qurtubi says that the reason after prohibiting these acts is that they involve changes in the creation of Allah.
